Hidden Message Headstones

Here’s an activity you could do anytime during November, the Month of the Holy Souls (or save the idea for next Hallowtide). I made these “Hidden Message Headstones” for a church event, and now plan to let my students use them this week too. Inspired by the custom of visiting cemeteries, especially this first week of November, and the history of creating grave rubbings to record memorial information, I made a set of cardboard headstones with puffy paint for the students to make rubbings of. But the messages on the headstones were reminders to pray for the dead and point to our hope of the resurrection. I also made an info sheet for the back for the kids and parents to read more about the “hidden message.”

Here’s some details if you want to do this yourself:

  • The cardboard I used was about 12x18”. You could do any size, as long as it is smaller than the paper for the rubbings.
  • I used craft/fabric “puff paint” to write and make designs. I originally wanted everything to be gray, but the store didn’t have gray paint, so white it was. I wanted the cardboard and paint to be the same color so that the message was more “hidden.” (I wonder if you could spray paint the whole thing gray? 🤔)
  • I lightly wrote out the words in pencil to give myself a guide, but didn't worry too much about it being perfect.
  • Note that even if the bottle says 4 hour dry time, count on a lot longer. Mine were still tacky 24 hours later.
  • Use large, thin paper for the rubbings. Newsprint would be perfect, copy paper works, or thin construction paper (what we used).
  • Peel the wrapping off black crayons and show the kids how to rub them sideways. Large or triangular shaped crayons work especially well. Circular motions or going in two different directions will capture more detail.
  • Make sure they read the meaning of the hidden message on the back of the headstone!
You can watch a video of me making these here.

Unlocking the Mysteries of the Old and New Testament with Biblical Typology for Children

"The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old is unveiled in the New." ~St. Augustine

I remember in late college when I was first introduced to the idea of typology during a Bible Study. Finding clues in the Old Testament that pointed to the coming of Jesus (and Mary, the Church, the Sacraments, etc.) and then seeing how those promises were fulfilled in the New Testament became like a curiosity-driven treasure hunt as I read and studied Sacred Scripture. Many years have passed, and Typology has become one of my very favorite ways to pray with the Old Testament. But I do remember wondering why it took so long for me to be introduced to this ancient idea!

Fortunately, today's Catholic kids don't have to wait for a college level class to begin understanding Biblical Typology. The Old and New Series is my absolute favorite typology tool to use in my classroom, and the books make it so easy for kids to make connections between the Old and New Testaments. As my students have read these, I literally get to watch those "light bulb" moments happen where they start to see all of the puzzle pieces come together.

I love them so much that when I had a donation to use on books for my classroom a couple of years ago, I requested that part of the money be used on a class set of these books so that I can better use them as a teaching resource. I have 5 or 6 copies of each title and specifically use them during a unit on the Old Testament with my 7th graders. They are able to analyze and discuss the content, but younger children will certainly enjoy the stories, especially as a read aloud where you look to find all of the connections in the matching illustrations and text.

The Old and New Series was written by the wonderful Maura Roan McKeegan with illustrations by the talented Ted Schluenderfritz. The last book in the series, The Word Within, was also coauthored by none other than Dr. Scott Hahn. The End of the Fiery Sword was actually one of the very first books that I every reviewed, so it is exciting to see the series come full circle with its sixth and final book. The titles include:

You can find the whole set at Emmaus Road Publishing here.

The Word Within: The Ark of the Covenant and Mary is the most recent, and final, addition to this collection. I'm so glad to see the series come to a conclusion and grateful to be able to use these books in my classroom for years to come. You may enjoy reading this interview from a few years ago where I got to ask Maura Roan McKeegan a few questions about quality children's books.

To help my students better understand the Biblical basis for each of these books, I made a study sheet for comparison. The sheet will allow students to read the actual text in Sacred Scripture and examine the similarities and differences in the stories. Then they can read the book from the Old and New series to gather deeper understanding through the poetic storytelling and detailed illustrations. Using the Biblical text is important, but I know that the books will help them draw connections, make comparisons, and help them comprehend the typology in a developmentally appropriate way.

All Souls Candles & Bulletin Board/Display

During the Month of All Souls, we pray for those that have gone before us. If you'd like a simple way to create a visual of the people that we are praying for, you can use these All Souls candles printables. There is a line to write the name of the deceased as well as the text of the Prayer for the Faithful Departed. These could be hung on a bulletin board in a classroom, taped along a hallway in a school, or used in a display for a parish.

The candle flame can be colored to represent being "lit," and there is a little room at the top and the bottom to add a decorative border in honor of the person if that is something you want to encourage.

Click here for the candle template: (we cut these out and then tacked each on a bulletin board)

Or here is a version with a single candle and a place to add a photo. These would be great for a school or parish display.

And here is a simple bulletin board header if it is helpful. I forget to take a picture of the bulletin board we made with our CCD families, but I'll hopefully remember and come back to add that later!

Memento Mori: Music for the Month of All Souls

I do love a good liturgically coordinated music playlist... so sometimes I share them here on the blog! My playlists are not always specifically church music or hymns. The Memento Mori playlist for example is filled with music I love that also has a deeper message of remembering our death and placing our hope in Christ.

The genres definitely lean towards folk/americana with some praise mixed in, so I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But I thought I'd share my melancholy collection for your November listening!

November Radiant Roundup

November, the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory
It's the month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory, a time that the Church Militant here on earth focuses our prayers on the Church Suffering. We also strive to orient our own gazes to Heaven, knowing that this life is only temporary. The days of Hallowtide- Halloween, All Saints, and All Souls- give us a perfect opportunity to teach kids about eternity and the hope that we have in Jesus. Here some activities for Hallowtide, as well as upcoming Saints' Feast Days and looking ahead to planning for Advent!
