Favorite Scripture Passages Guide Sheets

It's always handy to have a quick guide for finding good Scripture passages. I designed these cheat sheets to be something you could tape in a journal or fold and tuck in the cover of your Bible. They are great references for teachers/parents or guides for older kids learning to read the Bible on their own.

Bible Books for Catholic Kids

There's no more important story to share with your kids than the greatest story of all- the Story of Salvation History contained in the Holy Bible. While there is no replacement for the Bible itself, read together at Mass and at home, it can be so beneficial to have a variety of books that make the stories of Sacred Scripture more accessible for kids of all ages.

I've shared many, many books about the Bible on my website, but I thought it might be helpful to collect them all in one post and organize them by categories. This can help you find the type of Bible book you are looking for.

This list contains Amazon Affiliate links, which means if you click through and make a purchase, I earn a small commission at no cost to you. I'd also love to encourage you to shop directly with the publisher or with your local bookshop, or try to request these at your local library! I'm sure I've missed some books that would be great for this topic, so feel free to add your own recommendations in the comments! You can find my giant list of Catholic Kid Books by topic here.

Unlocking the Mysteries of the Old and New Testament with Biblical Typology for Children

"The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old is unveiled in the New." ~St. Augustine

I remember in late college when I was first introduced to the idea of typology during a Bible Study. Finding clues in the Old Testament that pointed to the coming of Jesus (and Mary, the Church, the Sacraments, etc.) and then seeing how those promises were fulfilled in the New Testament became like a curiosity-driven treasure hunt as I read and studied Sacred Scripture. Many years have passed, and Typology has become one of my very favorite ways to pray with the Old Testament. But I do remember wondering why it took so long for me to be introduced to this ancient idea!

Fortunately, today's Catholic kids don't have to wait for a college level class to begin understanding Biblical Typology. The Old and New Series is my absolute favorite typology tool to use in my classroom, and the books make it so easy for kids to make connections between the Old and New Testaments. As my students have read these, I literally get to watch those "light bulb" moments happen where they start to see all of the puzzle pieces come together.

I love them so much that when I had a donation to use on books for my classroom a couple of years ago, I requested that part of the money be used on a class set of these books so that I can better use them as a teaching resource. I have 5 or 6 copies of each title and specifically use them during a unit on the Old Testament with my 7th graders. They are able to analyze and discuss the content, but younger children will certainly enjoy the stories, especially as a read aloud where you look to find all of the connections in the matching illustrations and text.

The Old and New Series was written by the wonderful Maura Roan McKeegan with illustrations by the talented Ted Schluenderfritz. The last book in the series, The Word Within, was also coauthored by none other than Dr. Scott Hahn. The End of the Fiery Sword was actually one of the very first books that I every reviewed, so it is exciting to see the series come full circle with its sixth and final book. The titles include:

You can find the whole set at Emmaus Road Publishing here.

The Word Within: The Ark of the Covenant and Mary is the most recent, and final, addition to this collection. I'm so glad to see the series come to a conclusion and grateful to be able to use these books in my classroom for years to come. You may enjoy reading this interview from a few years ago where I got to ask Maura Roan McKeegan a few questions about quality children's books.

To help my students better understand the Biblical basis for each of these books, I made a study sheet for comparison. The sheet will allow students to read the actual text in Sacred Scripture and examine the similarities and differences in the stories. Then they can read the book from the Old and New series to gather deeper understanding through the poetic storytelling and detailed illustrations. Using the Biblical text is important, but I know that the books will help them draw connections, make comparisons, and help them comprehend the typology in a developmentally appropriate way.

Passport Studies- Interactive Experience about the Life of Jesus

I'm super excited to share this new collection of activities with you even though I know that it will probably only apply to a certain niche group of my audience. It has become one of my favorite units to teach and my students have given great feedback- so it's a win-win!

The origin of these studies is a unit where my 6th graders study the question "Who is Jesus?" primarily reflecting on the Incarnation- the who, what, when, where of Jesus' life. (Then in 7th and 8th grade we unpack what He taught and how He came to save us.) A couple of years ago, I pivoted all of the presentation of the content to these Passport Studies. Each day we travel to a new significant location in the life of Jesus, seeking both to understand what Scripture tells us happened there in the past, as well as visit on pilgrimage today to see the beautiful churches and holy sites.

It has been a huge hit! On the first day, I really make a big show of putting on my backpack and sunglasses, asking if they packed good walking shoes, tell them that we are going to be late to the airport, etc. They are still playing along, which is so sweet. I also really like that this is primarily a work-at-your-own-pace task, so it allows them to work independently and hopefully explore more deeply an area of interest.

Each Passport Study has these elements:

  • Passport cover- just the first slide, no student work.
  • A map of the region in the First Century- student pins the location
  • A two part Bible study of significant events that happened in this location. Questions are more fact based. Includes sacred art to illustrate the stories.
  • A virtual pilgrimage using a video, typically of a tour of the holy site today. (My students can't access YouTube videos, so we set a timer and "meet up" to go on a "group tour" and watch the video together in class.
  • A self-guided, 360 tour of the holy site using this free website.
  • A spot to add photo memories. Students either take screenshots of tours, use Google image search, or add their own sacred art to the photo page.
  • One more Bible Study passage connected to the location. This one is more prayerful and reflective.
  • A postcard home- this is the part that I tell them I pay the most attention to. They can be silly and creative, but have to write about both what happened in Jesus' life then and what the site is like today.
  • Also included is a slide with image sources, mostly because I am sharing the slides here with you. You can choose to leave those as a model for students, but make sure they understand they don't have a task to do on that slide.

Here are the locations and major stories highlighted I've included. It was so hard to whittle them down from all the possibilities in the Gospels. If you have a location you'd like to see included, you could always make a copy of one of the Passports and then add your own elements. I also adjust the number of these that we complete slightly. There are always schedule changes and more days with one class over the other, so sometimes I offer an "excursion day" where they get to pick between two locations to travel to in order to keep us on track.
  • Nazareth- The Annunciation, Holy Family at home after Flight to Egypt
  • Bethlehem- The Nativity, Visit of Shepherds, Visit of Wisemen
  • Jerusalem Part 1- The Finding in the Temple, return to Nazareth
  • Sea of Galilee- Call of First Disciples, Calming of the Storm, Feeding of the 5000
  • Cana- First miracle at Wedding of Cana, connection to Last Supper
  • Tiberius- Sermon on the Mount & The Beatitudes
  • Mt. Tabor- The Transfiguration, connection to the Ascension
  • Bethany- Mary & Martha, Raising of Lazarus
  • Jerusalem Part 2- Last Supper, Crucifixion, Resurrection
  • Emmaus- Road to Emmaus
Ideas for how to use these:
  • Once you make a copy, you are free to edit these to better fit the needs of your students/child.
  • Classroom teachers who use Google Classroom- Make a copy of my file, add to your own Google Drive, assign in Google Classroom, use "make copy for each student" feature.
  • ***REMINDER- If you are using Google Classroom, 99% of the time, you CANNOT assign students my original file. It is almost always blocked by school filters. Please make sure you make a copy of the file first, and then assign it. Otherwise I receive dozens of share requests that I can't solve! :)
  • Classroom teachers who use other classroom interfaces- Download a copy of the file as a PowerPoint, upload and assign in your classroom interface. (Formatting may be off- check for readability, etc.)
  • Classroom teachers whose students are too young or don't use Google Classroom, etc. Make a copy of my file, add to your own Google Drive, display on your smartboard or projector, and complete the study together as a class.
  • Parents, catechists, homeschoolers- Make a copy of my file and add to your own Google Drive or download as a PowerPoint. Have individual child work through the study.
  • Printing- This wasn't really intended as a print friendly project, but if you were doing it for a single child or small group, it could work! You would need to either skip or watch together the virtual pilgrimage and 360 tour.

NEW Immaculate Heart of Mary Resources

This summer, my parish got a new name! Combining the legacy of my Immaculate Conception parish with our neighbors whose church had originally be dedicated as St. Mary, our Catholic community is now called Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish. It's a perfect name honoring Our Lady and the devotion already present. We've been both remembering the history of each parish and celebrating this new beginning. I'm sure that many of you have been through or seen similar changes in your dioceses, and while there are many obstacles to overcome and emotions to process, we can also see the good fruit that is born through collaboration and building up community.

I made a bunch of new resources for our parish celebrations, bulletin, etc., and took advantage of the new creations to design some fresh IHM resources to share with you too! Click below to download these new printables:
